Rustic and early 20th century Swedish birch bark "Kont" basket with leather straps. A "Kont" is a type of basket (or today we would most likely say backpack) that was used and made in the rural northern part of Sweden from sometime in the 19th century up until the mid 20th century. Often used by workers to carry a variety of stuff around on there backs. This particular example is of rare large size with its original leather traps and wooden locking mechanism. Most likely from the Dalecarlia region which has a long and proven tradition of making a wide variety of folk art items. It has a very nice weaved checkered pattern from the birch bark. This is a true and genuine part of Swedens history. Very good condition with normal ware consistent with age and use.
